Sen. Gary Hart Endorses Mike Johnston's Campaign for Colorado Governor
For Immediate Release
Aug. 9, 2017
Gary Hart, who represented Colorado in the U.S. Senate from 1975 to 1987 has endorsed Mike Johnston for Colorado governor, calling him “one of the most creative and thoughtful leaders on education for our nation’s future.”
“Ahead of almost all those in his emerging generation of leaders, Mike has understood the linkage between high quality public education, and continuing education, and employment opportunity,” Hart wrote in an endorsement letter. “He knows America cannot compete in global markets without a superior educational system available to all. And further, he recognizes that we are all going to have to upgrade and improve our work skills throughout our lives.”
Johnston said he was honored by Hart’s faith in his candidacy.
“Sen. Hart is one of our nation’s greatest statesmen and most thoughtful leaders, who has been called on by presidents to tackle challenges as diverse as creating a homeland security strategy for the U.S. and monitoring Irish peace,” Johnston said. “We will do all we can to build a Colorado worthy of your vision.”
Johnston, a former teacher and principal who grew up in Eagle County and represented Northeast Denver in the Colorado Senate for two terms, has proposed a plan to provide two years of tuition-free college or mid-career job training for Coloradans, and was the first candidate to pledge to work with utilities to have Colorado generate 100 percent of the state’s electricity needs from renewable sources by 2040.

Mike Johnston for Governor of Colorado
Quite a number of years ago, I sought public office in Colorado, and then a few years later in the nation, on the twin themes of new leadership, generational change, and new ideas, new approaches to address new realities.
I believed then, and I believe now, that as important as years of experience in politics may be, in times of great transition we must, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, “disenthrall” ourselves from the past.
We must never compromise our principles. We must always look for ways to make them relevant to a changing age.
With this in mind, I highly recommend Mike Johnston to be Colorado’s next Governor.
Mike was a student of mine when he was in law school and I have maintained a friendship with him for the past 15 years. He has had considerable legislative experience in the Colorado Senate and is known nation-wide as one of the most creative and thoughtful leaders on education for our nation’s future.
Ahead of almost all those in his emerging generation of leaders, Mike has understood the linkage between high-quality public education, and continuing education, and employment and economic opportunity.
He knows America cannot compete in global markets without a superior educational system available to all. And, further, he recognizes that we all are going to have to upgrade and improve our work skills throughout our lives.
As Governor, Mike Johnston will work closely with a State Legislature he knows and particularly with a generation of new and young leaders prepared to move the State of Colorado into the 21st already characterized by transformative change.
Mike steadfastly avoids the partisanship that is handcuffing political progress at the State and national level and will seek bipartisan innovation at every opportunity.
These new and different times require a new and different leader like Mike Johnston in the Governor’s office.
United States Senator (Ret.)
